Our Schools

If you’re reading this now, you know your ABCs. But in rural Egypt, where our Egyptian cotton is grown, 32% of people don’t. With your help, we’re working to change that. In developing relationships with our farming communities, we learned that access to education for their children was their main need. So we started The ABCs Project.

  • 25 Schools Funded · 21 Built · 88% Girls Enrolled

  • With each Kotn order, we donate a portion of the proceeds annually to fund and build primary schools in the Nile Delta and Faiyum, Egypt, investing in our farming communities’ long-term economic growth. With the support of the local NGO Misr El Kheir Foundation, our goal is to provide every child in our farming communities with a safe, accessible, and quality education.

To date, we’ve funded 25 schools. This year, with your support, we’re donating a portion of proceeds towards the buildout and operations of even more schools.

Growing Together

Since day one, our mission has been to create shared, sustainable growth for the communities that we’re a part of. In working closely with our farming partners throughout the Nile Delta and Faiyum regions, we developed on-the-ground, personal relationships. When we spoke with our partners about how we can best serve their needs, there was one resounding ask: quality and accessible education for their children.

Despite improvements through the years, schools are still limited in rural Egypt, inaccessible for many children. With limited schools comes limited opportunities for the next generation, and limited growth for the entire community.

The Gender Gap

Currently, of the world’s illiterate adults, 2/3 are women. While there have been global improvements in literacy rates, gender disparities persist. The share of illiterate women remains unchanged over the past 20 years.

Working with our partners, we learned that girls don’t always get the chance to attend school in rural Egypt. This can be due to a lack of proximity to schools, cultural norms, or their families needing extra hands to help on the farms. To empower young girls to experience equal opportunity, we’ve prioritized a 2:1 girl to boy student ratio in our schools.

Our Schools

In 2017, we opened our first primary school in rural Egypt from sales collected from every single order to date. The students attending this school are the first 37 people in their village to learn to read and write.

For Black Friday that year, we decided to skip the sale, and instead, we reinvested our earnings to fund our second school. Since then, we’ve donated 100% of Black Friday proceeds for 10 years in a row—helping fund twenty-five schools.

With every purchase, your orders fund the build-out and operations of school infrastructure and furniture, books and supplies, water and electricity, technical training and salaries for facilitators, and maintenance of the roads that link communities to our schools.

Our Community

“We’re only 100 kilometres away from the closest city, but it feels like this place has been forgotten when it comes to the basic services. No hospitals, no schools, nothing. I never grew up dreaming to be a teacher, but when I saw what these kids go through, how little they have to look forward to, how out of mind their wellbeing is to the world, I knew I had to make a difference. I love these kids, they’re so bright and curious and have such a thirst to learn. We do some additional classes and services outside of the normal curriculum, too, which they love. Over the first summer of having the school, they continued to show up even after the school year was over, so we developed extracurricular programs to keep up with their enthusiasm. We do music, play sports, we do lessons about basic hygiene, and how to be a more productive citizen and person in this world.” —Alaa, Teacher in our Abou Hussein school

  • “My entire childhood, I dreamt of being able to go to school, to read, write, and maybe one day be a doctor. But I was never given the chance. In 1983, we heard they started building some schools in nearby villages in the province. I lobbied the local government to make us one of those villages that would get a school, I was 15 and still held that same dream to be a doctor, but I never heard back from anyone. Kotn and Misr El Kheir were the first people to approach us about building this school. I didn’t quite believe it at first, knowing the history of our village. Once I saw that it was real, I donated the only piece of land I owned, a tiny plot, as the land to use for the school! My dream is for one of my kids to be a doctor or an architect. My dream is for one of my kids to be able to look up at one of those billboards we see and be able to read what it says to me.” —Mubarak, Community Leader, Abou Hussein
