Tara Thomas calls herself an alchemist—someone capable of transforming or creating things through a seemingly magical process—and we agree. The Brooklyn-based vegan chef transforms plants to food to social movements, through urban gardening and Breaking Bread NYC, an organization she co-founded that serves food boxes and meals to New York communities facing oppression, inequality, and food insecurity.

“I believe my connection with eating what I grow stems from my childhood. My mother always made sure that I enjoyed fresh food and the process of systems. I feel that’s where my curiosity began. Sourcing, whether that means literally planting the seed or purchasing it from a local farmer—I find the most joy in finding beautiful food.”

“Breaking Bread NYC came about last June in the wake of the George Floyd protests and the pandemic to alleviate food insecurity in the city of NYC. Due to gentrification, democratizing food, food waste, and the overall system that serves the elite, my founders and I wanted to create a space of abundance. We’re joyed to share this with our community. Today, Breaking Bread provides 100 weekly CSA boxes to families in Brooklyn.”
