The Comforter and Bedspread Guide

If you've started the process of crafting your home's dream bed, you've probably caught yourself deciding between a duvet, a new comforter, or a bedspread. The final layer of your bedding set, it's an easy way to add extra warmth and different weights, while sprucing up your bedroom decor.

Seemingly simple, the world of comforter sets is a confusing one, the terms duvet, comforter and bedspread often being used interchangeably. So we created a guide to clear things up—and get you that much closer to a better night's sleep.

Quilted Comforter

What's a Comforter?

A single piece of bedding, the traditional fluffy comforter is filled with evenly distributed fibres to keep you warm and is usually quilted on the outside. No need for separate covers if you don't want one, comforters are designed to be laid directly on top of sheets, with or without a flat sheet.

Comforters vs Duvets

The difference between a comforter and a duvet is that while a comforter is complete on its own, a duvet requires an outer layer. The duvet itself is just a filled insert, sometimes called a comforter, which is why this can be confusing. Not meant to be seen, a duvet needs to be completed with its other half: the duvet cover. Like a pillow to a pillowcase, it's nothing without the other.

What’s a Bedspread?

A bedspread or throw is a single piece of bedding, designed to be a decorative top layer on your bed, similar to a comforter. While comforters are thicker and heavier, bedspreads are usually lightweight, making them perfect for warm nights or hot sleepers who find duvets and comforters trap too much warmth. Bedspreads are larger, typically covering the entire bed and draping over the edges, mimicing a bed skirt. Throws are much smaller, usually only covering half of a bed or mattress, and kept folded at the foot of the bed.

Why Use One?

Comforters are a great choice if you’re looking for an all-in-one package. Decorative and practical, they act as both a duvet and duvet cover in one piece. Plus, with only one item needed, they often come at a lower price than the duvet set alternative. While sometimes they can be difficult to wash, if you find one with easy care instructions, they're simpler to manage—no need to mess around with duvet cover ties or the struggles of making the bed.

For warm climates or hot sleepers that love sleeping with just sheets, bedspreads are a great alternative comforter to add a little extra weight without too much warmth. For an all-season version of your bedding that’s ready for any kind of temperature, you can layer a comforter and a bedspread. Sleep with them both for extra warmth in the winter or simply ditch the comforter on warm nights.

Embroidered Bedspread

What Makes Ours Special?

More than just added warmth, our comforters and bedspreads are decorative and specially crafted. No covers here—you’ll want to show these ones off.

When looking for good comforters, what’s on the inside counts as much as the outside. Many duvets and comforters are filled with synthetics that won’t biodegrade at the end of their life cycle. Synthetics can be itchy or lack breathability, and washing synthetic-fill comforters lead to microplastic pollution in our waterways.

That’s why our Quilted Comforter is crafted from all-natural materials—no synthetic comforters here, only 100% cotton on the inside and out. Quilted from multiple layers of soft, mid-weight cotton, which give it texture and breathability, and insulated with cotton ropes and twine for added warmth and weight. Plus, ours is easy to care for, thanks to the durability of cotton. Just machine wash cold and tumble dry low for its longest life.

Our bedspreads and throws are similarly made of only the finest natural fibres: cotton, linen, and wool. Handcrafted by artisans in Egypt, our bedspreads are handwoven using the ancient craft of the manual loom—a practice on the brink of extinction. Our Embroidered Bedspreads also feature embroidering by a group of women artisans in the Siwa Oasis, each unique to allow their artistic expression to shine through. Each style not only adds warmth and texture over your bedding but an impactful style statement for your home.
